The popularity of eternity rings has not just been in the west but also in the rest of the world. Rings have bee exchanged all over the world for centuries. This was usually to symbolize a bond of strong love or friendship. Others because they wanted to be remembered.
Rings can first be traced to the Ancient Egyptians. They are reported to be the very first people in the world to invent the art of making rings and wearing them as a piece of jewelery. This piece consisted of a continual band of metal which was embedded with precious stones and other kinds of semi-precious stones. Even in those days rings were symbols of everlasting love and friendship. This practice continues till today as people still exchange eternity rings to show that they love and care. The round continuous circle in a ring symbolizes two people who have pledged an undying friendship which is unbreakable.
Today, eternity rings are exchanged on a number of occasions. This may take the example of friendship. Men exchange rings in one way of the other but women do it more frequently. One occassion is when students are graduating. They thus exchange rings as a sign of remembrance for one another and also as symbol of committment.
The second example can be taken as engagement. An engagement is perhaps the most hyped and the most loved stage in a person’s life. Since it’s the beginning of a commitment of a lifetime people tend to make it memorable so that it stays in their hearts for eternity. Whether it is a proposal by someone of the opposite sex or you proposing to someone of your own choice, people exchange rings upon mutual alliance. Generally a man holds out the ring to the woman he loves!
Citing another important example here, we cannot forget the wedding. Wedding rings are exchanged along with wedding vows both by the man and the woman. A ring is the most essential part of a wedding.
Eternity rings come in gold, silver, bronze, ivory and precious stones. Many people are of the opinion that it is the feeling that matters the most. They are essentially right. Even then people don’t hesitate to spend almost everything on expensive wedding rings just because they believe that the more expensive the ring, the more will their love for their partner show up.
Parents and children too exchange rings. This practice was even seen during scriptural days. The adherence between parents and children is inviolable, some parents tend to exchange rings with their children as a sign of their love. This practice is common in households which have imminent detachment between parents and children, by distance.
Children going to the war often buy rings for their parents before they leave. Exchanging rings also takes place between children and parents in cases of imprisonment. Even though these rings are a symbol of love and sweet memories some prisons do not allow metals inside their premises.
