Giving gifts to your partner is harder than it looks. You love them so much that you want to show it in the form of a gift. After much thought, time, and often money, you eagerly present it to them. Sometimes, things end up just as they do on the diamond commercials with happy smiles and expressions of love. But many times, the giver is disappointed in the receiver’s reaction, and the receiver is either indifferent or hurt by the gift.

How can this possibly happen when both the giver and the receiver love each other very much? The answer: there are several different types of gifts, and each of us has a preference to what we choose to give and what we’d like to receive. It is important for our partner to know what type he is and what type we are, so that he gives us type of gift we value, and we give him the type that he appreciates.

There are many people that value traditional gifts. These are the stereotypical presents that lovers offer to each other. A spa gift certificate, jewelry, or a dozen roses are all good examples of a traditional gift. These gifts usually cost money. The receiver ovten values the gift by the price, as they often feel valued by how much money is spent on them.

There are those who love sentimental gifts. A love letter, handmade gifts, or dates created uniquely for the receiver are all examples of sentimental gifts. Often this type of gift costs little money. What the sentimental gift receiver is interested in is the time and heart you put into what you are giving them.

Other people prefer what I will call unseen gifts. These gift receivers don’t look to get something on a special occasion. What they would rather have is the unseen devotion their partner gives them every day. Unseen gifts include doing the dishes daily, financially providing for the family, or consistently saying how much you love and appreciate them. For this type of gift receiver, it’s all about being consistent and subtle. They value what you add to their lives every day to make it better.

There are people who appreciate gifts having to do with their hobbies or life passions. Someone who likes running would enjoy a pedometer. A musician would appreciate tickets to see their favorite band play. A computer techie would love the latest and greatest gadget to figure out. A hobby receiver will value the gift on how well it will allow them to enjoy their passion even better.

By finding out what type of gift receiver your partner is, you can always choose the right gift and stop getting gifts that are unappreciated. For example, a gym membership would be the perfect gift for the right kind of hobby gift receiver, but it might hurt the feelings of a traditional gift receiver. Knowing your partner is key to connecting with them in gift giving and in so many other ways.
