Stay Safe On A Date

by Pam Baldwin

Dating services are a big thing on the Internet nowadays. There are tons of companies, such as FriendFinder, with lots of members, making it easy for just about anybody to find people with the same interests. Especially for busy professionals, online dating is a very convenient service.

So, how do you stay safe in the online dating scene? People have justifiable concerns about meeting strangers they’ve only communicated with in email or FriendFinder private messaging. Many experts say that if you follow some common sense guidelines your online dating experience can be a safe and positive one. There are six basic guidelines to keep in mind when jumping into online dating.

First, you should make meet that person in a public place. Don’t let the date know your home address. Even if you dated the person before, you should be careful. Give out only your cell phone number, because it is possible to trace the home address by a landline number. Don’t worry about your date taking offense to it, it is for safety.

Be sure to meet in a public place, such as a concert, or movies, or a local Starbucks, somewhere with lots of people. A good idea is to go on a double date, with one of your friends. It might be a bit awkward, but at least it is safe.

Another important safety tip is to avoid alcohol on your first date. You don’t want your judgement to be impaired or to let your guard down. If you do drink, however, keep your alcohol consumption to a minimum and always keep sight of your glass.

One more tip is to pay half the bill on your first date. That way, you don’t feel obligated to go on a second date if you are interested.

Another good dating safety idea is to let a friend know where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Have the friend check in by telephone to make sure you arrived home safely. You might also want to end your date by meeting with friends.

Last but not least, trust your judgment. If something doesn’t feel right about the person, then it probably isn’t. If you feel uneasy, end the date early. Just because you talked with the person a lot by email, you can only see that something is not right with that person when you talk to him/her in person. If you trust your judgment and use common sense, you will have a safe and great date!
