Getting a Grip on Your Telephone Usage
Posted at Jul 4th, 2009 in Online Personals
The telephone has really changed our lives in many different ways and not just a few of us use it regularly, both at home and in a work environment. Although it certainly does help us, there are a number of different ways in which it has also harmed us at the same time. One of the reasons why this is the case is because the telephone tends to interrupt our lives regularly, especially if it rings almost nonstop. Getting control over this piece of technology is important for you to be able to get your life back.
The most important thing for you to understand about the telephone is the fact that it is not necessary for you to pick it up every time it rings. We have all been conditioned by the telephone company and our own history to feel as if we are obligated to pick up the telephone every time we hear the ringing sound.
The simple fact of the matter is, it is your arm and your finger. The telephone does not need to control this part of your body and you need to learn how to not answer the phone, simply because it is ringing. Once you are able to master this simple task of allowing the telephone to go to voicemail, you will be taking a step into a larger world. It is a liberating, and it frees up much of our time which is used talking when it could be used for other things.
When you are on the telephone, you should make sure that that is all that you are doing at that time. Most of us think that we are great multitaskers and we could try to do a number of different things at the same time, even whenever we are on the telephone. Believe it or not, very few people were able to multitask effectively so give the telephone the attention that it deserves whenever you’re on it.
Another way for you to use the telephone effectively is to keep in mind that people enjoy talking about themselves. Don’t try to dominate the conversation but give them the opportunity to talk every once in a while. It’s a great way for you to be considered as a good listener, and people will walk away from the telephone with a more pleasant feeling about you and the conversation that you just hand.
If you use the phone regularly whenever you’re at work, there is something that you can do which will help your business in a number of different ways. Many of us have to leave voice mails and we typically only give our telephone number and name so that we can get a call back. Why not think of it as an opportunity to be able to give yourself a soft pitch and to warm them up to whatever it is that you’re going to talk to them about when they do call back? You will find that your success picks up as a result.
The telephone can either be a burden or it can be a tool that we use to our benefit. By using it properly and keeping it in its place, we can benefit by this piece of technology that all of us carry around.
